Rugby

Rugby

Rugby has been a widely played and popular game in Templeogue College since the school opened back in 1966. It continues to be played across all age grades in the College. Rugby is a game that caters for all and is an excellent way for incoming and existing students to interact and form strong bonds of friendship and teamwork with their peers.

Whilst success on the biggest stage has ultimately eluded Templeogue College the school can be proud of many achievements at rugby through the decades. Two JCT Cup final appearances in 1980 and 1985 saw the School narrowly fall short on each occasion. League success was attained in 2002 and 2014 while the College has in recent years won a number of McMullen Shield competitions.

A number of Templeogue Past pupils have also enjoyed great careers in the Professional game. Malcolm O Kelly 1991 won over 90 caps in the 2nd row for Ireland in a career spanning 12 years. He was also a 2 time Lion Tourist in 2001 and 2005. Conor McPhillips, 1999, was an Ireland sevens International. He also enjoyed a long career at Connacht and is currently assistant coach to Pat Lam at Bristol Bears RFC in the English Premiership.

More recently David Mcsharry 2008 enjoyed a very successful stint with Connacht before injury cruelly ended his professional ambitions. A 6 Nations Panellist in 2013 he is considered very unlucky not to have been internationally capped. Eric O Sullivan 2014 is currently plying his trade with Ulster Rugby in Belfast and enjoyed a stellar breakthrough season last year. Hopes are high he can be another Templeogue International in the making. Eric was Captain of the School league winning team in the 2013-14 season.

As always the school remains indebted to all staff members who willingly and graciously give of their time to help out with coaching and travelling to matches.
