SSE - School Self Evaluation

School Self-Evaluation (SSE)

At Templeogue College, we are committed to continually improving the quality of teaching and learning for all our students. One important way we do this is through School Self-Evaluation (SSE).

What is School Self-Evaluation?

School Self-Evaluation is a structured process that helps schools reflect on their current practices, identify strengths and areas for improvement, and take action to enhance the overall learning experience. It is part of a national initiative supported by the Department of Education, aimed at ensuring schools provide the best possible education for their students. School self-evaluation is a collaborative, inclusive, and reflective process of internal school review with an evidence-based approach, it involves gathering information from a range of sources and then making judgements; all of this with a view to bring about improvements in students’ learning.

How Does It Work?

SSE is a collaborative process involving school leadership, teachers, students, and parents. It takes place in cycles and follows six clear steps:

  1. Identify Focus – The school selects an area of teaching and learning to evaluate based on their specific context or needs.
  2. Gather Evidence – Information is collected through surveys, assessment data, inspection reports and feedback from students, staff, and parents.
  3. Analyse and Make Judgements – The school reviews the evidence to identify what is working well and what could be improved.
  4. Write and Share the Report and Improvement Plan – A summary of the findings and a School Improvement Plan are developed and shared.
  5. Put the Plan into Action – The school takes practical steps to improve the selected area.
  6. Monitor and Reflect – Progress is tracked and the impact of the changes is reviewed over time.

Why Is SSE Important?

SSE helps ensure that schools:

  • Focus on the needs of their students
  • Use evidence to inform decisions
  • Set realistic goals for improvement
  • Encourage collaboration and a shared sense of purpose
  • Communicate openly with parents and the wider school community

How Are Parents and Students Involved?

Parental input and student voice is a vital part of the SSE process. We regularly invite parents and students to share their views through surveys and consultations. This feedback helps us understand our students experiences of key aspects of school life.
