Religious Education - JUNIOR CYCLE
In Templeogue College we follow the Junior Cycle Religious Education (R.E.) Specification which can be accessed at https://ncca.ie/media/3785/junior-cycle-religious-education-specification.pdf. This three year course leads to a final examination in the Junior Cycle state exam. Included in this is are CBA (Classroom Based Assessment) components which are completed in 2nd and 3rd Year. Students will have R.E. 2 times per week on their timetable.
In Junior Cycle R.E. classes students will explore 5 major world religions found in Ireland (Hinduism. Judaism, Buddhism, Christianity and Islam) as well as non-religious options (Humanism). By exploring multiple faiths and non-religious responses to questions about life our students may learn more about their own belief system which forms part of our Mission Statement.
Through the R.E. curriculum we aim to develop knowledge, understanding, skills, attitudes and values to enable our young people to come to an understanding of religion and its relevance to life, relationships, society and the wider world.
Some of the topics covered on the R.E. Junior Cycle curriculum include:
- An introduction to faith traditions and non-religious groups found in Ireland
- The history of a major world religion
- The sacred text of a major world religion
- Morality and moral issues facing young people today
- How Irish spirituality has been shaped over time
