Course Overview:
Leaving Certificate Geography explores the physical, environmental, and human aspects of the world around us. It is a dynamic and relevant subject that connects students to the local, national, and global issues shaping our world today. Students develop valuable skills in research, analysis, and interpretation, making Geography both an academic and practical subject.

Course Layout:
The course is divided into three main components:

  • Core Units (mandatory for all students):
    • Patterns and Processes in the Physical Environment
      (e.g., rivers, glaciers, volcanoes)
    • Regional Geography
      (e.g., study of regions in Ireland, Europe, and the wider world)
    • Geographical Investigation and Skills
      (fieldwork project completed and submitted prior to the written exam)
  • Elective Units (students choose one elective):
    • Elective Unit 4: Patterns and Processes in Economic Activities
      (e.g., industry, energy, globalisation)
    • Elective Unit 5: Patterns and Processes in the Human Environment
      (e.g., settlement, urbanisation, population dynamics)
  • Optional Units (for Higher Level students only — one topic selected):
    • Global Interdependence
    • Geoecology
    • Culture and Identity
    • The Atmosphere–Ocean Environment

Assessment:

  • 80% Written Examination (assesses the Core Units, Elective, and Optional Unit)
  • 20% Geographical Investigation (individual fieldwork project)
