Templeogue College C.S.Sp

GAA

Gaelic football and hurling have enjoyed a proud and successful existence in Templeogue College. Gaelic games have been played since the early days of the College.

The first achievement of note was when the College reached an u15 Gaelic Schools' semi-final. The rapid outward expansion of Dublin city and the development of new suburbs and housing estates in the 70s and 80s led to the establishment of many new G.A.A. clubs in the College's catchment area. Students and teachers who entered the College were already members of these clubs and this led to the establishment of more teams within the school.

The role played by parents and families must be acknowledged. Their generous support and help has allowed hurling and football to flourish in Templeogue College. Templeogue College is also grateful to the nearby clubs who allow us to use their facilities for games.

Mick O'Hara was the first lay teacher to coach Gaelic Football in the College. He enjoyed much success in blitzes against other Holy Ghost schools. This then led to the entering of teams in Dublin schools competitions at u16 and senior level. The last Dublin title came in 2008 with the senior team narrowly missing out on provincial success.

Many students both past and present have distinguished themselves on various Dublin county teams throughout the years. Pride of place must go to Enda Sheedy (Class of 1992) who was part of the Dublin senior football team that won an All-Ireland in 1995. Eoghan O'Gara (Class of 2004) and Denis Bastick (Class of 1998) have also won multiple All-Irelands.

Fr. Ronnie Grimshaw, John O'Sullivan, Brendan Broderick and Kevin O'Brien were the first teachers to establish and enter College hurling teams into formal competitions in the 1980s. Silverware soon followed and hurling became an integral part of sporting life in Templeogue College

David Sweeney (Class of 1995), Tim Sweeney (Class of 2003), David Curtin (Class of 1999) and Chris Bennett (Class of 2015) have played senior championship hurling with Dublin.

David Sweeney in 2003 and David Curtin in 2005 had the honour of captaining Dublin those years

Dublin Hurling School of the Year (2011)

In November 2011, it was announced that Templeogue College was awarded the ‘Dublin Hurling School of the Year’. This was awarded to the college in recognition of its achievements and improvements it had made in the previous decade. The college had moved from the ‘E’ grade to the ‘A’ grade in a little less than 10 years, winning many trophies along the way. At a Gala dinner in early December where the Dublin senior hurlers were presented with their league medals, the college received a plaque in honour of its achievements as well as a new set of jerseys.
