Economics

Leaving Certificate Economics introduces students to how economies work at personal, national, and global levels. The course explores key economic concepts such as supply and demand, inflation, employment, taxation, government policy, and international trade. It encourages students to think critically about current economic issues and to develop informed opinions based on evidence and analysis.

Students learn how individuals, businesses, and governments make choices and how these decisions affect economic outcomes. The subject fosters analytical thinking, problem-solving, and an understanding of real-world economic challenges and opportunities.

Assessment in Leaving Certificate Economics consists of two components:

  • Research Study (20%)
Completed during the school year, the Research Study allows students to investigate a real-world economic issue of interest. They apply economic concepts and data to explore the topic, demonstrate research skills, and present their findings in a structured written format. This is submitted to the State Examinations Commission (SEC) and is externally assessed.

  • Final Written Examination (80%)
A 2.5-hour exam assessing students’ understanding of core economic principles and their ability to apply these to real-life and theoretical scenarios. The paper includes:

    • Short-answer questions

    • Data-response questions

    • Extended written responses based on contemporary economic issues

This subject is ideal for students interested in current affairs, global markets, finance, business, or public policy, and it provides a strong foundation for further study in economics, business, finance, and related fields.
