About Junior Cycle CSPE (Civic, Social and Political Education)
CSPE is a core part of the Junior Cycle curriculum that focuses on helping students become active, informed, and responsible citizens. It encourages them to explore how society works, understand the importance of democracy, human rights, and sustainability, and reflect on their role in shaping the world around them.
Course Aims:
The course aims to:
-
Develop students’ understanding of civic, social and political issues
-
Foster a respect for human rights and responsibilities
-
Encourage engagement with democratic processes and institutions
-
Promote active citizenship and participation in the community
Strands of Learning:
CSPE is built around three interrelated strands:
-
Rights and Responsibilities
Students learn about the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, explore global and local issues such as poverty and inequality, and examine how rights are upheld (or denied) in various contexts.
-
Global Citizenship
This strand focuses on sustainability, development, and the impact of globalization. Students are encouraged to think critically about environmental and social issues and how individuals and groups can work toward a more just world.
-
Exploring Democracy
Students investigate how democracy functions at local, national, and international levels. They explore the role of government, the importance of voting, and how laws are made.
