Business Studies

Leaving Certificate Business provides students with a practical understanding of how business operates in the real world. The course explores a wide range of topics including enterprise, management, marketing, finance, human resources, and the global economy. Students learn about the role of entrepreneurs, the functions of businesses, and how decision-making affects performance and growth.

The subject develops key skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, and financial literacy. It also encourages ethical awareness and responsible business practice, helping students understand the impact of business decisions on society and the environment.

Assessment in Leaving Certificate Business is based on two components:

  • Final Written Examination (100%)
The 3-hour written exam is set and marked by the State Examinations Commission (SEC) and includes:

    • Section A: Short-answer questions testing a broad range of topics.

    • Section B: Applied business questions that require students to apply their knowledge to real-life business scenarios.

    • Section C: Long-answer questions offering deeper analysis and evaluation of key business concepts and case studies.

There is no project or coursework element; all assessment is through the final exam.

This subject is ideal for students interested in careers or further study in business, management, marketing, law, finance, entrepreneurship, or public administration. It provides a solid foundation for understanding the commercial world and the challenges faced by modern organisations.
