Biology

The Leaving Certificate Biology curriculum, set for introduction in September 2025, offers students a comprehensive exploration of life sciences, emphasising both theoretical understanding and practical application. This curriculum is structured to cultivate curiosity and enthusiasm for biology, fostering scientific literacy and lifelong learning.

Curriculum Structure

The curriculum is organised into four primary strands:

  1. Unifying Strand: Nature of Science: This foundational strand emphasises the principles and methodologies underpinning scientific inquiry. Students will engage in activities that highlight the significance of observation, experimentation, and analysis in developing scientific knowledge.
  1. Strand 1: Organisation of Life: Focusing on the hierarchical structure of living organisms, this strand covers topics from cellular components to complex biological systems, providing insights into the building blocks of life.
  1. Strand 2: Structures and Processes of Life: This section delves into the functional aspects of biology, exploring physiological processes, genetic mechanisms, and the biochemical pathways that sustain life.
  1. Strand 3: Interactions of Life: Students will examine ecological relationships, environmental interactions, and the impact of human activities on ecosystems, fostering an understanding of the interconnectedness of life forms.

Key Competencies

The curriculum is designed to develop essential skills, including:

  • Critical and Creative Thinking: Encouraging analytical approaches to problem-solving and innovative thinking.
  • Information Processing: Enhancing abilities to gather, interpret, and evaluate data effectively.
  • Working with Others: Promoting collaborative skills through group projects and discussions.
  • Being Personally Effective: Fostering self-directed learning and personal responsibility in educational pursuits.

Assessment Components

Student performance will be evaluated through two main components:

  1. Biology in Practice Investigation (40%): This investigative project allows students to apply their knowledge to real-world biological questions. Conducted during the course, it emphasises research, experimentation, and analytical skills.
  1. Written Examination (60%): A comprehensive exam assessing understanding across all strands, testing both knowledge and the ability to apply concepts in various contexts.

Practical Activities

Practical, hands-on activities are integral to the curriculum, enabling students to experience the processes of scientific investigation firsthand. These activities are designed to reinforce theoretical concepts and develop essential laboratory skills.

Integration of Digital Technology

The curriculum encourages the use of digital tools to enhance learning, data analysis, and presentation skills, reflecting the increasing role of technology in scientific research.

In summary, the Leaving Certificate Biology curriculum offers a balanced approach, intertwining theoretical knowledge with practical skills. It prepares students for further education and careers in science, while also equipping them with competencies applicable in various aspects of life.
