We were delighted to announce the launch of our first Autism Class in April 2025—a milestone in our ongoing commitment to building an inclusive, student-centred learning environment. This new class will provide a supportive and tailored setting where students with autism can thrive, while remaining active members of our school community.
A Special Visit from Adam Harris, CEO of AsIAm
To celebrate this important development, we were honoured to welcome Adam Harris, founder and CEO of AsIAm Ireland, the country’s leading autism advocacy organisation. Adam officially opened the Autism Class and met with our 2nd Year students to talk about autism, inclusion, and the importance of understanding neurodiversity in everyday life.
His visit was not only inspiring but also a strong endorsement of the direction we are taking as a school. It affirmed the value of creating spaces where all students can be understood, supported, and empowered.
Our Vision for Inclusion
The Autism Class is part of a broader vision to ensure every student has the opportunity to succeed. We recognise that students with autism may face unique challenges but also bring unique perspectives, strengths, and talents to the classroom.
Our goal is to:
- Provide a safe, calm, and structured learning environment
- Support students’ academic, social, and emotional development
- Offer access to mainstream subjects and activities, based on individual interests and abilities
- Foster understanding and inclusion across the entire school community
How the Autism Class Will Work
The class will open in April 2025 with six students ranging from First to Sixth Year, reflecting our commitment to flexible, needs-led placement. A second Autism Class is scheduled to open in September 2025, as part of our long-term plan to grow our inclusive capacity.
Each student will have an Individualised Student Support Plan, developed collaboratively with parents, specialist staff, and outside agencies where appropriate. These plans, aligned with the EPSEN Act (2004), help tailor supports to each learner’s goals and needs.
Curriculum and Learning Opportunities
Students enrolled in the Autism Class will have access to:
- The full Junior and Senior Cycle curriculum
- A range of practical and non-exam subjects aimed at life skills and work readiness
- Social communication and emotional regulation support
- Transition planning and preparation for life beyond school
Learning will occur in a dedicated, low-arousal classroom, with opportunities for inclusion in mainstream classes where appropriate.
Staff Training and Community Support
Our staff undergo continuous specialist training in autism education and inclusive teaching strategies. We are also building links with organisations such as AsIAm, NCSE, and local support networks to ensure we offer best-practice approaches grounded in empathy, respect, and evidence.
A Whole-School Commitment
Inclusion is not just about one classroom—it’s about a culture. We believe that creating an inclusive environment benefits all students. It teaches empathy, flexibility, collaboration, and appreciation of diversity—skills that will serve every student well in life.
