Junior Cycle Art encourages students to explore and express their ideas through a variety of media including drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, and digital work. The course nurtures creativity, imagination, and personal expression while also developing students' visual literacy, technical skills, and appreciation for the role of art in cultural and historical contexts.
Assessment in Junior Cycle Art is designed to reflect both the process and the finished product of artistic work. It includes:
-
Classroom-Based Assessments (CBAs):
Students complete two CBAs over the three-year cycle:
-
CBA 1 – From Process to Realisation (Year 2): Students research, explore, and develop an idea into a finished artwork.
-
CBA 2 – Communicate and Reflect (Year 3): Students present and discuss their work, demonstrating their ability to communicate artistic intentions and reflect on their process.
-
Final Assessment (Practical Examination):
Conducted in third year, this involves students completing a practical art project over a set period. The project includes research, preparatory work, and a final piece, all based on a given stimulus. This is externally assessed by the State Examinations Commission (SEC) and counts for 100% of the final grade.
This balanced approach values the development of creative thinking and making skills, as well as the ability to reflect and communicate visually and verbally.
