About Senior Cycle History

Senior Cycle History offers students the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the past while developing key analytical and research skills that are valuable for further education and life beyond school.

The course explores major political, social, economic, and cultural developments in Irish and international history. Students examine key personalities, events, and themes through the careful analysis of primary and secondary sources, fostering a critical approach to evidence and historical narrative.

Course Structure:

The curriculum is divided into four key Fields of Study, two Irish and two international. Schools typically select one topic from each pair, such as:

  1. Ireland:

    • Movements for Political and Social Reform in Ireland (1870–1914)

    • The Pursuit of Sovereignty and the Impact of Partition (1912–1949)

  2. Europe and the Wider World:

    • Dictatorship and Democracy in Europe (1920–1945)

    • The United States and the World (1945–1989)

Key Features of the Course:

  • The Research Study Report (RSR):
A unique component of the Leaving Certificate History course where students choose their own historical topic to investigate. They carry out independent research, analyse sources, and present their findings in a structured report. This accounts for 20% of the final grade and supports the development of self-directed learning and critical thinking skills.

  • Final Written Examination:
The exam assesses students’ understanding of key topics and their ability to evaluate historical sources, form arguments, and write structured essays.
