Transition Year German:
TY German offers students a refreshing break from exam pressures while continuing to build their language skills in a fun, creative, and engaging way. The emphasis is on spoken German and cultural awareness, with activities designed to boost confidence and communication. Students explore German-speaking countries through film, music, games, and digital media. Project work might include researching a city or cultural tradition, creating posters or videos, or taking part in school language competitions. Where possible, students may also have the chance to connect with German speakers through pen pal projects or language exchanges, fostering real-world use of the language and a deeper appreciation of German culture.
5th & 6th Year German:
In Senior Cycle German, students develop their language skills to a higher level, with a strong focus on preparation for the Leaving Certificate exam. Lessons balance grammar, vocabulary development, and exam techniques with discussions of real-world topics such as education, the environment, relationships, and life in German-speaking countries. Students engage with authentic texts like newspaper articles, podcasts, videos, and literary excerpts to improve comprehension and cultural insight. The oral exam is a key component, and students receive regular practice in conversation, role-plays, and opinion-based discussions. Writing skills are also sharpened through tasks such as diary entries, emails, and opinion pieces. By the end of 6th Year, students are well-equipped to express themselves confidently and fluently in German, both for the exam and beyond.
